MPIO Workshop - Broadmeadow

The Office of Sport’s Hunter Regional Office will be staging it’s seventh Member Protection Information Officer workshop for 2017 later next month on Monday evening August 28

The workshop will be staged in the McDonald Jones Stadium Administration Building. The building is located adjacent to the western stand entry of the stadium at the northern end of the carpark and within the Administration Building the hallway entry for the workshop location is adjacent to the Newcastle Knights merchandise shop.

What is an MPIO and why do we have them?

A Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) provides information about the rights, responsibilities and options available to an individual making a complaint in sport. They can also inform and advise sport administrators and complaint handlers in Member Protection Policy for specific sports. MPIOs are impartial and don’t mediate or investigate complaints. They may reside in a club, state association or national sports organisation and can also freelance.

To ensure sporting clubs implement best practice around member protection and safeguarding children many governing bodies of sport, plus the Office of Sport, are increasing the availability of MPIO face-to-face training. This will help ensure best practice is in place at those clubs who complete the training and establish MPIOs supported by the related policies.

Ensuring there are consistent complaint handling processes across sport which also demonstrate best practice are critical to maintaining safe and friendly environments in sporting clubs. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has further bought into focus the reason for ensuring clubs utilise best practice in this regard and MPIOs are an important part of ensuring clubs are safeguarding all members, especially children.

MPIO training process

The online Member Protection Information Officer training (first component of MPIO training) can be accessed via the Australian Sports Commission’s Learning Portal. The relevant course tab is ‘Play By the Rules’ and one needs to complete all seven modules relevant for the MPIO training. If you have not done any prior courses via the ASC Learning Portal you will need to register a profile. Once completing the online training participants have the opportunity to attend a face-to-face course (three-hours) to finalise their MPIO training.

If you have already completed the online training component all you simply need to do is to book onto the workshop.

It’s important to remember selecting the right person to be the MPIO is a key part of the process. However, multiple people from clubs are certainly encouraged to undertake the training so there is a broad understanding of the concept across the club committee and other key members of club staff eg. coaches.
